As part of our ongoing exploration of Ecology and Art through the Kuzu plant (Kudzu / Japanese arrowroot), we hosted a specialized talk and workshop for adults titled “Savoring Kuzu.” Created to spark dialogue and inspire new perspectives, the afternoon was paired with a seasonal treat: traditional Zenzai (sweet red bean soup) made with authentic Yoshino Hon-Kuzu.
「葛（くず）を味わう」生態学、哲学、そしてアート
葛（くず）を通じた「生態学とアート」の継続的な探求の一環として、大人を対象としたトーク＆ワークショップ「葛を味わう」を開催しました。対話や新たな視点を見出すきっかけになればと、五感で葛に触れてもらえるよう企画しました。ワークショップでは、吉野産の本葛を用いた「ぜんざい」もお楽しみいただきました。
The Lecture
The talk explored the fascinating intersections between ecology and art. Moving beyond the survival strategies of the Kuzu plant, the lecture delved into deeper philosophical territory. We traced the history of how “species,” the natural world, and reproduction were understood prior to Darwin’s Origin of Species—from Ancient Greek philosophy to the theological worldviews of the Middle Ages.
Workshop & Dialogue
Due to the intimate group size, the session evolved into a lively dialogue, with active Q&A flowing naturally throughout the talk. Following the lecture, participants enjoyed special Kuzu desserts and coffee while crafting delicate charms using natural Kuzu fibers.
レクチャー：生態学から哲学へ
トークでは、生態学とアートに共通する視座について、葛の生態や植物の生存戦略を切り口に解説しました。さらに大人向けのトピックとして、内容は生態学から哲学の領域へと広がり、ダーウィンの『種の起源』以前の世界へ。古代ギリシャ哲学から中世のキリスト教的世界観において、「種」や「自然界」、あるいは「生殖」という概念がどのように解釈されていたのかを紐解きました。
対話と創作のひととき
少人数のアットホームな会ということもあり、レクチャー中も活発な質疑応答が飛び交う、双方向の対話の場となりました。その後は本葛のデザートとコーヒーを楽しみながら、葛の繊維を用いたチャーム作りを実施。手先の感覚に集中し、素材の質感に触れながら、創作の時間を楽しみました。

About the Kuzu Project
Kuzu (Kudzu / Japanese arrowroot) is a fascinating plant that poses profound questions about the relationship between humans and nature, as well as the nature of value itself. While it is highly prized for its medicinal and culinary uses, it is also frequently dismissed as an unwanted weed in our landscapes.
To inspire a fresh perspective on our daily lives and the nature around us, ecologist Yumi Yamada and artist Pimeriko collaborate on ongoing research and participatory projects that explore these dualities.

薬や食品として重宝されるかたわら、景観のなかでは雑草として疎まれる葛は、人と自然の関係や、ものごとの価値について様々な問いを投げかけてくる興味深い存在です。
私達の日常や身近な自然を少し違った角度からとらえるきっかけになるよう、生態学研究者の山田由美とアーティストのピメリコが共同でリサーチを行い、参加型の企画を行っています。
